Barn Stats

This is a barn I photographed in October.  I miss the fall colors.  Although, I am finding beauty in every season.  There are so many things that are easier to see without leaves.  Cardinals for instance!  They are stunning. I have yet to take a decent picture of one, but will keep trying. :)  My mind tends to wander, and I start thinking up questions.  Thank goodness these days we have google, I love getting instant answers to my pressing questions.  Today's question?  Which state has the most old barns??

Here is what I found out:

The results of the recent Census of Agriculture include some surprises about where older barns are located.  For example, the state with the most farms reporting pre-1960 barns is not Iowa, nor Wisconsin, nor Pennsylvania.  It is Texas.  (OK, maybe this isn't really a surprise.)  Below is a ranking of the top ten states where the most farmers or ranchers said they have a barn built prior to 1960.

Texas: 51,236  farms or ranches reporting at least one barn built before 1960
Missouri: 36,007
Wisconsin: 35,386
Kentucky: 35,224
Iowa: 34,224
Ohio: 33,762
Pennsylvania: 29,321
Tennessee: 27,555
Minnesota: 27,165
Illinois: 25,767

Hooray!  Missouri is number two.  I better get busy if I'm going to photograph all 36,007 of them.  I think it's time to join a barn preservation group and keep these wonderful structures around!!

I would have thought Pennsylvania, especially Amish country! Beautiful scenic shot, love the pretty tree. Have a happy day!

Yeah for Texas! I have certainly found some oldies on my rides around our area....and I just love them....and I think your idea for a barn preservation society is wonderful. The family farmer is slowly becoming extinct....maybe we should try to preserve them, too. :)

texas barns might be old, but nothing as pretty as the midwestern ones. :)

The old ones have so much more character. Looking forward to seeing your photo archive grow.

Beautiful barn and tree. I love seeing the fall colors again, but I'm finding beauty in the snow covered ones too.
Even though Minnesota is next to the last on the list, I'm going to have a hard time photographing all the barns here!

So interesting! I didn't think we'd be #2 so I'm happy about that! You better get busy if you're going to photograph all those MO barns ;)

the old barns are so gorgeous. The ones they put up these days are usually metal. Ugh. I agree that you should join a historic barn preservation group!
