Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Here is another goody for you.  I just finished it and I loved it!  The book contains a creepy collection of black and white vintage photo's.  All photos are authentic.  Collectors have found the pictures at flea markets and estate sales.  The book has been inspired by the pictures.  It is fabulous!  Guess what? they are making it into a movie, and the book sequel is coming out 2013 yippeee!

As a kid Jacob formed a special bond with his grandfather over his bizarre tales and photos of levitating girls and invisible boys. Now at 16, he is reeling from the old man's unexpected death. Then Jacob is given a mysterious letter that propels him on a journey to the remote Welsh island where his grandfather grew up. There, he finds the children from the photographs--alive and well--despite the islanders’ assertion that all were killed decades ago. As Jacob begins to unravel more about his grandfather’s childhood, he suspects he is being trailed by a monster only he can see. A haunting and out-of-the-ordinary read, debut author Ransom Rigg’s first-person narration is convincing and absorbing, and every detail he draws our eye to is deftly woven into an unforgettable whole. Interspersed with photos throughout, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a truly atmospheric novel with plot twists, turns, and surprises that will delight readers of any age.

Tortilla Crusted Tilapia

Oh kids!  Have you ever tried this nummy fish from Costco??  If not dash out and get some.  It makes the most heavenly fish tacos.  Be sure to use these uncooked tortilla's when you make them.  Scrumptious!

My latest crush

Can you believe how much this guy sounds like Freddie Mercury?? I showed this to Ryan and he said "Wow, he sounds just like Freddie, why doesn't the guy clean his room?" Who cares about clean rooms when you can do a cover like that!! ;) I also love this video of him singing Bohemian Rhapsody with his band and church group. Awesome!(this is what my kids and I look like during it.;)

I'm Melllllltinnnng!

I am thinking these are must makes!

Nobody Don't Love Nobody

Beyond the Blackboard was originally published as Nobody Don't Love Nobody I wanted to provide this link because under it's original title the book is much less expensive on Amazon. The companion edition for the movie is newer hence more money. I hope everyone will read it. The stories of the children are heartbreaking, but it will absolutely inspire you to do more for your fellow man. The teacher in the book has an amazing capacity to love.

Beyond the Blackboard

My mom mailed me this book a couple of day ago. It is so completely wonderful.  It is a true story about a first time school teacher, who taught homeless children.  Get a box of tissues and read away.  It will restore your faith in humanity.  It has also been made into a Hallmark film.  I can't wait to watch it.

PS-Nothing makes me want to ball up my fist and punch somebody in the face more than people who scoff at the less fortunate and say "They are lazy, I worked hard, nobody helped me."  Just being born out of poverty and drug addiction is an amazing leg up in life.

Random things about Oreo Molds, a Book, and the Sister Wives Dude

I LOVE,love making chocolate dipped Oreo's. Remember when I made them for Valentines Day? They are so simple and turn out super cute.  Michaels and Hobby Lobby both have a great selection of cookie molds.  I found this peppermint candy oreo mold today.  I can't wait to make them!

This is what my original copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond looked like. (Wow-it was only 1.25 back then.)  I read this book for the first time 25 YEARS AGO! Eeks! I am old. It has remained a favorite of mine. I always get in the mood for it every autumn. I visited the Salem Witch Museum several years ago and bought myself another copy. Such a good book. I had the biggest crush on Nat EVER. :)

Okay now for the Sister Wives business.  Today I saw Mr. Sister Wives and his wife Robyn at Costco. I can't bring myself to watch the show, but have seen from the commercials that the other wives think Kody favors Robyn. Apparently so, the other women are home watching eight million kids while Robyn gets to go out on the town to sweet places like Costco.  ;) Of course I didn't have my phone with me, I would have snapped a little picture on the sly. ;)

One last thing... This preview cracks me up.  I don't think I will be giving the silent treatment anymore. :)

Do it yourself holiday canvases

A few weeks ago I did a couple of DIY photo canvases with some family photos. I loved the way they turned out.  I thought it would be fun to make a couple of holiday themed canvases.  Here is what I started out with.  I printed a vintage Santa pic at costco, grabbed a 11X14 pre stretched canvas, scrapbook paper, matte mod podge, scissors, sponge brushes, pencil and ruler.  I measured the edges of my canvas.  They were exactly 1/2 inch.  If I were cooler I would have a paper cutter, since I am not super cool, I had to go ghetto and use pencil, scissors, and ruler. ;)  I used one of the sponge brushes and applied mod podge all over the back of my print.  I then attached it to my canvas.  I used a clean applicator brush to smooth it out.  I then allowed it to dry for 30 min.
After 30 minutes I applied Mod Podge all over the front of the print with a sponge brush.  It is milky, but will dry clear.

After the front dried, I used a sponge brush to apply Mod Podge to the side and stuck my scrapbook paper strips to the sides.  After the strips dried I put a coat of Mod Podge over top of the strips to seal everything.
Here is the finished product.
I took this shot, so you could see the cool finish that you will end up with. Easy, fun, and cute!

I also made one for Halloween.  Good thinking right?? It being the next holiday and all. ;)  I used the Halloween eye chart found here.  Forgive the quality of the pic. I snapped it late at night after my kids went to bed, so the color is a bit distorted.

Krylon Glitter Blast spraypaint

I have seen Krylon Glitterblast on a couple of different blogs, and couldn't wait to try it.  I grabbed a couple of pumpkins from Dollar Tree and sprayed away.  I think they turned out cute. I love the variety of colors the glitter paint comes in.  I think I will be using truckloads of this stuff on Christmas decor. :)

What I have been up to...

My mom is in town for three weeks, when she is here it is non stop shopping and projects. Here are a few gems I have found with her....
I think this 1950's hot chocolate tin is the coolest thing ever.  I am going to use it for a fun Christmas display.  I think a bottle brush tree will look adorable in it.  Look, the .39 cent price is still visible!
My mom laughed her head off at me for buying this.  She said in her day, this would be known as garbage. :)
I found these adorable magnets at Target's dollar section.
My new Flea Market magazine arrived.  Hooray!
This book is all kinds of fun.  Yummy hot chocolate mixes to make for yourself, or make mixes to give as gifts.  Last but not least, straws and milk bottles!!  I have wanted them forever.  Straws and bottles were both purchased from Amazon.

Vintage Window Ornament Hanger

This has been on my to do list for a while now.  The four paned window, that I bought for the project had painted glass in it.  See.....
My plan was to tape the panes and then smash them out with a hammer.  Luckily, my smartie pants mother is in town and had a better idea.  We chipped all of the caulk away and the panes lifted right out intact!!  After the glass was removed, we spray painted the window red, and screwed in the tiny hooks.  Now I am on the look out for some vintage Shiny Brite ornaments.  I LOVE them!  SO happy to have another project crossed off of my list. :)  I think it turned out cute.  Can't wait to hang ornaments on it.

Halloween Kick off

Back to school has been CRAZY! The bus system here is SO messed up. My daughters bus was a no show, I wanted to follow the bus home to learn the route because it is a super long bus ride. I waited at the school to follow, and after 90 min. the bus for my daughter still hadn't arrived.  I finally went in and picked her up(the school was locked and the office was closed so some door beating took place.) My daughter said she talked to kids the next day and they didn't get home until 7 pm!!!!!!!  At least I knew she was safe.  She has a cell, and called me, plus I was in the parking lot so I could see what they were doing with the kids.  Some of our poor parents don't speak English and were told that all of the students had left on the buses.  One  of the Spanish speaking mothers was in tears and her daughter was translating for her.  This is elementary school!  They need to be super careful with these babies.  Needless to say, I am driving her to and from school, I don't do flakey, especially where my kids are concerned.  It could have been worse, I can't believe what our loser bus system did to this poor girl on the first day of school.  I was in tears over my bus madness, I can't imagine how upset that poor man was.  SO I was in need for some projects to get the bad school bus taste out of my mouth.  Nothing major around the house, we are job hunting and hopefully won't be here much longer. Just a few holiday projects. I have finished a Halloween one today, and am working on a couple more for Christmas.
I forgot to take befores, but this project is a thrifted frame and two thrifted candlesticks spray painted black.  The inside of the frame is a piece of fabric, and a reproduction of a vintage Halloween decoration.

I found this little beauty at Home Goods
The sprinkles are also from Home Goods,  I LOVE the yellow and orange harvest mix!
Witches brew cupcake toppers, and pumpkin liner also from Home Goods.
What about you?  Any back to school trauma?  Any fun projects in the works?  happy Labor Day weekend!
